Hi, I'm Ash.
How do you like me so far?
I was born and partially raised in one of the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona but have lived throughout most of the Southwestern US and got my Master's Degree (in the ever-useful Medieval and Renaissance History) at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, UK.
One of the few birthdays (or maybe it was Christmas? 🤔) that I distinctly remember receiving a gift was when I was about 6 or 7 years old, and I got a point-and-click "Tomato" camera. I was extremely annoying and took photos of everyone. Poorly.
I won't tell you that my career in photography was a direct line from there, because I didn't really get back into it heavily until graduate school, when it was like a switch was flipped. I asked for "as cheap of a camera as you can find, as long as it's an SLR" for another birthday. That's what I got. It was a Nikon, and 20 years later, I am still shooting on Nikon as a result!
Just like when I was 7, I started taking photos of everyone. Poorly.
But I kept at it and before long I was winning "honourable mention" awards. I took my first paid photography gig that summer, and it has been a part of my life ever since.
I have since graduated to VERY expensive digital SLRs and though I split my time between photography and working in the tech industry, capturing what I see in the world will always be my first love!
What I love to shoot:
When I am working, I like to capture moments. I am not as fond of staged portraiture, but I am told that I'm pretty good at it and the number of folks who keep referring me to others seems to indicate that I am! Instead, I like to wander around and photograph people having a conversation or holding hands, or even just looking at their phones. I like to capture life as it is actually happening.
When it is just for myself, it isn't that much different, but I like to do it when I'm out traveling to a different city or country. I like to see new and interesting places and capture little, interesting details on walls or doors. Street art that defines a city. Hawkers and street merchants.
I cannot wait to work with you! If you have any questions, there is a link on every page that goes to my "HIRE" site where you can send off an inquiry. I give a free consultation to get an idea of what anyone may need and how I can help, so please don't hesitate to take advantage of it!
Cheers,
~Ash.
